Book Review: Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth

SISTERS, SECRETS, LOVE, AND MURDER... Sally Hepworth’s new novel has it all.

For as long as they can remember, Jessica, Norah, and Alicia have been told how lucky they are. As young girls they were rescued from family tragedies and raised by a loving foster mother, Miss Fairchild, on an idyllic farming estate and given an elusive second chance at a happy family life.

But their childhood wasn’t the fairy tale everyone thinks it was. Miss Fairchild had rules. Miss Fairchild could be unpredictable. And Miss Fairchild was never, ever to be crossed. In a moment of desperation, the three broke away from Miss Fairchild and thought they were free. Even though they never saw her again, she was always somewhere in the shadows of their minds. When a body is discovered under the home they grew up in, the foster sisters find themselves thrust into the spotlight as key witnesses. Or are they prime suspects?

A thrilling page-turner of sisterhood, secrets, love, and murder

MY REVIEW:

Darling GirlsDarling Girls by Sally Hepworth
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Jessica, Norah and Alicia were foster sisters for a short time. Always told how lucky they were. But there were secrets in that house of abuse, both physical and mental. Now it is years later and they are adults, each with their own baggage.
The house they had lived in was taken down and they found a body buried under the house. Now they have to o n for questioning. Miss Fairchild, the foster mom shows up as well.
I liked getting to know all 3 girls and how they ended up the way they did. We also know someone is taking to a psychiatrist and the things that are said is also very disturbing.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's for the book to review.

Summer is heating up for reluctant psychic Riley Thorn and her handsome private investigator boyfriend, Nick Santiago. First, her disapproving grandmother arrives determined to make Riley take her powers seriously or face the wrath of "the Guild." Then there's the homicide detective who needs her help figuring out who murdered the well-dressed corpse in the walk-in closet. Nick's got his own hands full with a tricky missing person case and his parents who want to know why he didn't tell them about his live-in girlfriend. Then there's the fact that he's still the tiniest bit stressed about Riley almost getting murdered earlier that summer. The last thing he wants is her getting involved in another investigation. Things go from bad to worse when the body count starts stacking up, the meet-the-parents dinner goes horribly wrong, and their elderly roommate is up to no good…dressed like a mime. To top it off, Riley is forced to return to Channel 50 on official police business to question her spray-tanned news anchor ex-husband and his new weather girl fiancĂ©e. The trouble comes to a head when Riley receives a warning from the Back off or she's next. Someone has to solve these murders before she becomes the next corpse.

MY REVIEW:

The Corpse In the Closet (Riley Thorn, #2)The Corpse In the Closet by Lucy Score
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This is a fun and quirky series. Riley lives in a apartment/mansion complex with quite a few eccentric neighbors. She has a hot boyfriend who is a PI and hires her to work with him. She is also a psychic and helps the police with cases but also helps people without meaning to. Her parents and sister are quirky but her Grandmother is a horrible bully who I wish everyone at once would stand up to her and not give in to her demands. She is not friendly at all. Everything is her way and her timeline.

MY REVIEW:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sara lost her best friend, Lainey to cancer. Lainey left a note for her to go to Rome and scatter her ashes. They had gone there is young adults and always wanted to go back.
Sara's marriage is over and her boys are graduating from high school. She quit her job and so she packs and goes.
I couldn't stand her ex. It was all about him and his needs. Her sons weren't any better. All 3 of the men needed a kick in the butt.
Once Sara gets on the plane she meets a women and this woman tells her about her friend with enough room in his apartment and all the fun they will have.
I enjoyed getting to see Rome through her eyes and the people that she met and maybe even a relationship. I enjoyed this book very much.

Book Review: Nowhere To Hide by Keri Beevis

Duncan Stone is one of the country's most eligible and handsome bachelors, and he wants to take me, Callie Parker, on a date. At first I am surprised and flattered, the envy of my friends. Then when our whirlwind romance escalates and he asks me to move in with him, it's like a dream come true. But as I get to really know my new boyfriend, my fairytale turns into a nightmare. Duncan is no Prince Charming. He is the Devil. Isolated from my friends and family, watched day and night, a prisoner in my own life, I know if I am going to survive, I need to escape. When a chance encounter with an old friend throws me a lifeline, I realise this is my live or die moment, and I find a hiding place deep in the Norfolk countryside. I'm supposed to feel safe here, so why do I hear footsteps outside my hideaway late at night, and sense that someone is watching me? Is it paranoia, or has Duncan managed to find me?
Or perhaps the danger is closer to home than I realise.

MY REVIEW:

Nowhere to HideNowhere to Hide by Keri Beevis
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Duncan is charming and handsome but underneath he is a control freak, a nightmare, and a devil all rolled into one.
When he takes a liking to Callie, the relationship moves fast. Then he isolates her. Makes it look like she is not stable to her family and her job. He s abusive both physically and mentally.. She even gets rid of her dog to keep the dog safe.
Then she decides to go to her sister for help but that backfires. But help she does get and tries to start over again by old friends. Even to start a new relationship with a man. Someone I liked from the start.
I could not put this book down and I hope to read more books by this author.

A steamy second-chance romance about a magical florist’s unexpected reunion with her high school sweetheart as she fake dates his soon-to-be stepbrother.

So, when the shop’s potential financier shares news of his wedding, Romina jumps on the opportunity to discuss buying the business. What better place to negotiate a deal than at a wedding, even if she has to fake-date her chaotic colleague Trevor to get an invitation? The boy who, eleven years ago, broke her heart, and who now thinks she and Trevor are dating.

MY REVIEW:

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Romina is a florist and uses magic through the flowers and the flower's meanings. She pretends date a guy who ends up being a soon to be step brother of her ex,
Alex was her high school sweetheart and she never got over him. As we read more about him then he never got over her either.
I thought the book was cute.
The one thing I don't like with books meant for adults are the cutesy cartoon covers. It looks like a mid grade fairytale cover.

Book Review: Riley Thorne and The Dead Guy Next Door - Lucy Score

A nice, normal life. Is that too much to ask? For Riley Thorn it is.

Divorced. Broke. Living with a pack of elderly roommates. And those hallucinations she's diligently ignoring? Her tarot card-dealing mom is convinced they're clairvoyant visions.

Just when things can't get worse, a so-hot-it-should-be-illegal private investigator shows up on her doorstep looking for a neighbor...who turns up murdered.

Nick Santiago doesn't play well with others. Unless the "others" are of the female persuasion. Wink. He's a rebel, a black sheep, a man who prefers a buffet of options to being stuck with the same entrée every night, if you catch his drift.

When the pretty, possibly psychic Riley lands at the top of the list of suspects, Nick volunteers to find out whodunit. Only because he likes solving mysteries not because he wants to flex his heroic muscles for the damsel in distress.

All they have to do is figure out who pulled the trigger, keep the by-the-book detective with a grudge at bay, and deal with a stranger claiming he was sent to help Riley hone her psychic gifts. All before the killer discovers she's a loose end that requires snipping.

Everyone’s welcome at the Stag—vampire, wolf or human. As long as they don’t make trouble. Or ask too many questions about what we’re selling out of the back room.

I keep the beers coming, and in return the town keeps my secret. But when a gang of deadly vampires shows up at the bar, it’s clear they’re not looking for a drink. They want to take my business. Or my blood.

But this is more than just a shake down. All over town, people are dropping like flies. Disappearing or attacking their neighbors. It’s like they’re possessed. And someone—or something—is pulling the strings.

As if I didn’t have enough trouble, a fancy new restaurant just opened right across the street. And a sexy vampire from out of town seems to think I need protection. I have plenty of dangerous friends already… so why can’t I stop thinking about him?

The whole town is going to hell. Perhaps literally. And it looks like it’s up to me to stop it.

Bloodlust BluesBloodlust Blues by Luanne Bennett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This s a first book of a new series and I enjoyed it a lot.
Charley inherited the bar when her mom died. It welcomes, humans, vampires, werewolves and anything else out there as long as you don't cause trouble. She also runs a what I call a blood bank of vampire blood to humans who are sick as it is cheaper than meds and chemo.
But someone wants to make money off of Charley and her business, which wlll put her business out.
There is also a man that bought the restaurant across the road from her bar. But that went up really quick and when people eat there they just aren;t the same anymore. Charley and her friends do not trust the owner.
I had to laugh at some of the antics that went on and some of her friends but there is a hot guy who seems interested in her.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the 3rd book of a series. I did not read the other 2 books and I feel I should have to know more of what was going on. But I still enjoyed the book. It is a dark fairytale. Had magic, enemies to lovers vibes.
I liked the banter between Gwen and Mordred. He sent her from Avalon but Avalon had other ideas to keep her.
It had a village called Camelot. There was mention of King Arthur and Lancelot. One of the characters we get to know is Ghalahad.

Lyra has gone through a lot and has the scars to prove it, She needs to get to Zomea, the alleged realm of the dead. But her belief that Nyx would be with her on this journey has been shattered. Colton, a fae, is by her side.
As Lyra and Colton grow closer, they are challenged by the darkness stirring within Lyra, threatening both her and the fate of Eguina.
The prophecy says one man will save her and the belief is it is Nyx.
This is the 2nd book of the series. I enjoyed the storyline and had to remember that Lyra is still a teenager and so has some teenager ideas.
I had a hard time putting this book down and I don't alway like love triangles but it works well in this book.
It was well written and I can't wait for the next book.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Iris and Gabrielle have come home from vacation and when they get home there is a guest in their house. Their close friend , Laure has left her husband, Pierre. Saying that he told her he had a child with someone else.
They also meet their new neighbors and their new gardener who comes to help Gabrielle with hs garden.
I wasn't very trusting of the new neighbor for some reason.. She just seemed a little off to me.
If I was Iris and Gabrielle then I would have had to say something to Laure about her staying to long. she was driving Iris crazy. But the ending I did not see coming.

MY REVIEW:

Her Feud (Drew Family #7)Her Feud by Emma Tallon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The 7th book of the Drew family and just as good if not better than the others.
Lily Drew is head of her mob and family. she does not put up with anything. She lost her one son,Connor, to his dad and his business and doesn't think she can forgive him.
Killian , Connor's twin brother, is on his mom's side but wished that his mom and brother can move forward. Meanwhile Killian is getting married.
Scarlett is Lily's niece and also in the family business. She is still getting over what happened to her cousin Ruby,
They may be mob and I don't approve of the things they do, but the fierce loyalty of family keeps me wanting to read more.
Thank you Emma Tallon for another great book and to Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC,

Audiobook Review: The Boy Who Cried Bear by Kelley Armstrong

Audiobook Expected publication February 20, 2024
Buy on Amazon

In The Boy Who Cried Bear, New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong keeps readers on the edge of their seats while detective Casey Duncan tries to locate the threat before it’s too late. . .

Haven’s Rock is a well-hidden town surrounded by forest. And it’s supposed to be, being that it’s a refuge for those who need to disappear. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton already feel at home in their new town, which reminds them of where they first met in Rockton. And while they know how to navigate the woods and its various dangers, other residents don’t. Which is why people aren't allowed to wander off alone.

When Max, the town’s youngest resident—taught to track animals by Eric—fears a bear is stalking a hiking party, alarms are raised. Even stranger, the ten-year-old swears the bear had human eyes. Casey and Eric know the dangers a bear can present, so they’re taking it seriously. But odd occurrences are happening all around them, and when a dead body turns up, they’re not sure what they’re up against.

MY REVIEW:

The Boy Who Cried Bear (Haven's Rock, #2)The Boy Who Cried Bear by Kelley Armstrong
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The narrator for this audiobook had a nice voice and was pleasant to listen to.
It is a mystery set in Canada. Haven's Rock is a town that is hidden for people who need to hide or start over a new life. It is surrounded by a forest and people are asked to not go into the forest or at least not go alone.
10 year old Max said he saw a bear but then said it was a bear with a man's eyes. Then he goes missing. While on the hunt to look for him we find out things about Max's family and why they came to Haven''s Rock. I didn't read the first book and I don't feel like I missed to much except for maybe character development.

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. All efforts to make her produce "normal" stories failed.

Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves, while safely locked away in her basement writing dungeon. She's the author of the NYT-bestselling "Women of the Otherworld" paranormal suspense series and "Darkest Powers" young adult urban fantasy trilogy, as well as the Nadia Stafford crime series. Armstrong lives in southwestern Ontario with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Audiobook review: The Wife's Mistake by Lorna Douneaeva

Expected publication February 19, 2024
Buy from Amazon

I have the life I’ve always dreamed of… but how long will it be until the past catches up with me?

I can’t believe how far my husband, Hayden, and I have come. I never expected that one day I’d be sipping a steaming coffee over our marble countertop or finishing off a humid summer day with a dip in our sparkling pool. But even though we’re living in paradise, I’ve never felt so distant from my husband. I’m certain he’s hiding something from me. Before, I would have confided in my friends and family but in this new life of ours, I’m terrified to trust anyone…

Now, with Hayden out again, my evening is quiet. From our floor-to-ceiling windows, I watch the pool water ripple under the raindrops. But I swear I see movement beyond the garden hedges. I try to shake my fears away, I must be imagining things. That’s what Hayden would say.

But then I find the hand-delivered note and my heart pounds in my chest as I scan the neat words.

You don’t deserve this life.

My blood runs cold. I thought I’d kept all my secrets well hidden, but now as I look out to the still night, I realise it’s only a matter of time until my past catches up with me – a past my husband still has no idea about. I know what I have to do to protect my perfect new life, but those around me have no idea how far I’m willing to go to keep it…

Utterly gripping and full of jaw-dropping twists, fans of Freida McFadden, Lisa Jewell and Daniel Hurst will be completely hooked by The Wife’s Mistake!

This audio was good. I liked the narrator and the storyline. There really wasn't any characters that I liked except for Marianne.
