Book Review: The Scot's Bride by Paula Quinn

The Scot's Bride (The MacGregors: Highland Heirs #6)AN IRRESISTIBLE SCOUNDREL
Highlander Patrick MacGregor likes his life just the way it is. Fighting for his coin, enjoying a woman's charms, and bearing no responsibility at all. Aye, that's the life for him. That is, until Patrick sees her-a raven-haired beauty with eyes as dark as midnight. Patrick swore never to fall in love. Not even with a lass as wild as he...especially when she's from a rival clan.

AN UNDENIABLE DESIRE
Charlotte Cunningham knows Patrick is trouble the moment she sets eyes on him. Her only goal is to escape the possibility of marriage. Any marriage. But as the summer days turn into sultry nights, enticing her beyond reason, Charlie is forced to choose between the freedom she craves and the reckless rogue she can't forget.

                                  MY REVIEW:

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Patrick MacGregor is on his way home when he meets Charlotte Cunningham. Neither one of them wants to marry and there seems to be a problem with the feud of families. He isn't quite honest with her on who he is. She sneaks out at night to get meds for her sister who is sickly. But when these 2 collide there is no mistaken that there is chemistry and neither wants to admit it.
Her family also isn't very nice. Her 1 brother is fine but her dad and her other brother are horrible. I am going to continue on with this series.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Olivia is renovating a beach house for her best friend, Maria. She ends up running into her teen crush, Alexander. He is also her best friend's brother in law. Alexander is very shy and he asks her for a makeover and to teach him how to woo the love of his life, Jessica. Only Jessica is really Olivia. I really liked the characters in this book but at times they were childish in not listening to each other. Even when Alexander told Olivia his true feelings, she backed off even though she feels the same way. Then after learning something about her he goes running off back home, to Greece. They both should have just listened to each other and were truthful to each other. But the ending was great!!

EXCERPT:
Prologue
Nine and a half years earlier

Olivia hadn’t imagined that her first time would be in a large walk-in linen closet, even if it was in a five star hotel. One tentative kiss from the shy, sweet Alexander had changed everything.
Both of them were shaking in each other’s arms, the napkins they had come for lay strewn beside them by their feet.
Alexander’s touch stole Olivia’s breath. Everything seemed to move in slow motion. The inevitability was mesmerizing.
This shouldn’t be happening…We’ve only known each other a few weeks. Six whole wonderful, romantic weeks.
But no words would come out.
Was that romantic music playing only inside her head?
Within minutes their world turned into a grown up paradise where only love and pleasure existed.
Enveloped within those large muscular arms, Olivia welcomed the heat in her pulsating body as she tried to control her erratic breathing.
She smiled under Alexander’s stare, grateful that he also looked as shaken up as she was.
“Olivia, wow.” His low voice surrounded her in their cocoon. She loved the delicious scent of his understated cologne mingled with the smell of lemony fresh laundry.
“I…I’m sorry, Olivia. Are you OK? Did I hurt you?”
When she shook her head he sighed and added, “Good. I couldn’t help myself, I love you…so much.” He kissed her again and she wanted to cry from his sweetness. Her heart thrummed even faster as she looked up into his frank, green eyes. They were filled with awe as if he hadn’t realized the intensity of what he felt until the words had come out.
Their incredible bond of having given each other the gift of their virginities could never be broken. She felt it in her bones and saw it clearly in his face that Alexander was in the same exact nirvana.
As if psychic, he whispered into her temple, his warmth breath sending shivers of delight through her body, “You know I love you very much, right, Olivia? So much…it hurts. This isn’t just…”
She nodded and smiled, blinking tears away to enjoy the vision of the adoration in his eyes. In his arms she felt absolutely beautiful, not overweight or clumsy, or geeky.
Everything felt so perfect, so right.
She could imagine meeting his large family, those Anderson boys and the parents. She visualized how much her parents and her younger sister, Lisa would love this humble, shy yet amazing guy.
But there was no rush for any of that. At eighteen she was still in college to pursue interior design, and he was considering his options right here in Wrightsville Beach or in his birth country, Greece.
“I can’t wait to show you off at the gala tomorrow.” Alexander’s deep slow laugh reverberated within his chest straight into her heart.
“You make me so happy, Olivia. I could never imagine feeling like this about anyone in the world.” His lips trailed her temple to her ear, then from her cheek to her mouth.
Another kiss to seal their love. It was magical.
She was about to admit her love for him when the loud knock on the door jarred her.
“Hey, Alexander, are you there? Where’d you disappear to?” Brittany’s nasal voice broke through their haven.
Cool air met Olivia’s exposed upper body, making her shiver.

Alexander sighed and with a regretful expression let her go. “Be there shortly.” He called out. Then he helped her with her with her blouse before adjusting his own clothing.
“This summer, today, they’ve been the most important times of my life. You’re unforgettable. My Olivia.”
She felt her lower lip tremble again as she kept her happy tears at bay and smiled. They would see each other later and she would tell him that she loved him too.
It would all work out, she just knew it.

Blog Tour: Release and Review - Breaking Without You by Carrie Ann Ryan

About BREAKING WITHOUT YOU

Available April 16, 2019
From NYT bestselling author Carrie Ann Ryan, comes a brand new series where second chances don’t come often, and overcoming an unexpected loss means breaking everything you knew.
I fell for Cameron Connolly at the wrong time. And when he left, I thought my life was over. But then, after the worst happened, I truly understood what that phrase meant. Now, he’s not ready for a second chance, and I’m not offering one. Though given that our families have been forced together after losing one of our own, I know there’s no turning back. Not this time. Not again. Not when it comes to Cameron.
~~
I never wanted to hurt Violet Knight, but there were reasons I had to leave all those years ago—not that she'd believe me if I told her what they were. I not only left her, I also left my foster brothers. Honestly, I didn’t want to come back to Denver to help run my father’s failing brewery. But when it comes to my brothers, I know I’ll find a way to make it work. Perhaps I’ll even earn Violet’s forgiveness and face the connection we both thought long forgotten in the process. Because I wanted her then, but now I know I need her. I just hope she needs me.

MY REVIEW:

Breaking Without You (Fractured Connections, #1)Breaking Without You by Carrie Ann Ryan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This starts out at a funeral of a young woman who had committed suicide. You are with her 3 best friends and the one closest to her, Violet, does not understand why. She questions herself why she did not see any signs.
Violet had fallen for Cameron Connelly back when they were younger and then one day he just up and left with no goodbye. As we meet Cameron and his brothers we know why and how bad he feels for how he handled things. The Connelly brothers were adopted when they were younger and their parents are now gone. Now they are trying to be a family again and run the family brewery.
I loved getting to know each one of these characters and also seeing how the death of their friend has affected their lives.
Having a friend who did commit suicide at also a young age it does ask many questions that never will be answered. I felt this was so well written.
I received this from Inklsinger for an honest review.

PROLOGUE - TEASER
Alissa Walker was a princess. Bree suspected she was biased in this determination (as any proud, eighteen-year-old sister would be), but on Alissa’s eighth birthday, Alissa could be anything she wanted—especially with a face as adorable as hers.
Freckled nose? Check.
Missing front teeth? Double check.
Blonde, curtained bangs that were constantly pushed away by tiny hands with pink fingernails?
How could anyone not love this kid to death?

But his friends are trying to find him and to prove he isn't evil. Cipher had to hand over a list to "the boss" and feels guilty from the ramifications that happened. Cipher and Lyre, his handler are out to free themselves and it isn't going to be easy. This was a novella so around 200 pages.

                                                          EXCERPT:

Lilliana inhaled a shaky breath as she stood on the portal pad inside Sheoul-gra, the symbols engraved into the stone glowing hotly. A breeze swirled around her, rattling the leaves on the perpetually blooming citrus trees and bringing their tangy and sweet scents to her nose. Grassy lawns stretched for acres, broken by babbling streams and worn paths — and the occasional ancient Greek column or demonic statue that rose into the featureless gray sky.
Several yards away, a fountain that once ran with blood splashed crystal water onto pavers leading to outbuildings that housed dozens of Unfallen angels and Memitim. And beyond the fountain, Azagoth’s palace towered over all, its pale walls gleaming.
Relief sifted through her, temporarily replacing her nervousness. The realm was attuned to Azagoth’s moods, and she wasn’t sure what she’d have done if she’d come back to find the kind of decay and evil that had once held court here.
The Grim Reaper’s realm could be beautiful but disconcerting; look, but not too closely, touch, but don’t feel.
Her gut turned over, and inside her rounded belly, the baby stirred as if sensing the return of her anxiety.
Except that anxiety was too mellow a word for what she was experiencing. Really, she was flat-out terrified, mere moments away from seeing her husband for the first time in months. For the first time since she’d left him.
And he didn’t have a clue that she was pregnant.
She almost regretted telling Reaver that she didn’t need him to accompany her down here when he’d flashed her from Ares’s Greek island to the outer portal. She should have at least allowed Maleficent, a hellhound that had shadowed her everywhere on the island, to come with her. The hound had refused to leave her side until Cara distracted the beast long enough for Lilliana to get away. She was going to miss the moose-sized canine, but Cara assured her that Mal would find her if the hellhound had bonded with her.
Lilliana was going to have a hard enough time trying to explain bringing home a baby, let alone a pet that ate people.
Resting her palm on her baby bump, she stepped off the landing pad and started toward the palace, her heart pounding wildly. Azagoth would have sensed her presence by now.
Before that thought even faded, the skin on the back of her neck tingled, and she stopped in her tracks.
He was here.
He was behind her.
She should turn around and face him. But damn, she wasn’t ready for this.

Closing her eyes, she let out a long, ragged breath, and when she spoke, she could only manage a whisper. “Azagoth.”

EXCERPT :

Cipher threw out a hand to warn Lyre off. His control sucked, which he proved as a fireball shot at her from the palm of his hand.

Fire engulfed her, demon-faced flames that laughed and bit at her. No! Oh, shit. He felt her screams all the way to his gut as she fell to the ground and writhed in violent agony,

Soretay! Stop!” He yelled commands in Sheoulic as he rushed toward her, but his words were useless.

He dove on top of her, covering her with his body. He tried to wrap his ugly-ass wings around her, but the fuckers didn’t behave, instead fanning the flames, beating the both of them as they flapped uselessly.

Then, for no reason he could figure out, the shrieking apparitions flickered out. Lyre went limp beneath him, her exhausted, panting breaths puffing hot air against his neck.

“Wow,” she rasped. “That was unexpected.”

He pushed himself up on one arm and looked down at her. Scorch marks streaked her face and her clothes were singed. The hemline of her shirt was completely gone, leaving her flat belly exposed, a smudge of soot forming a crescent under her navel.

He wanted to clean it off with his tongue. Too bad she was playing for the wrong team.

You’re playing for the same team now.

No he wasn’t. He might be a fallen angel, but not by choice. And, until evil took him over completely, he wasn’t in league with them yet. And he’d never play for Bael the Seriously Unstable. Right now he had no choice, but once he figured out these new powers, he was going to get the fuck out of here.

“You can let me up anytime now,” Lyre said softly. “Preferably before one of your new powers incinerates or melts me.”

“Right.” He jumped up and offered her a hand.

“Thanks, but no.” Eyeing his hand like it was a viper, she pushed to her feet and backed away from him.. “I’m just going to watch from…over there.” She pointed to a bluff in the distance. The far distance.

It was probably for the best. With little to lose, he was going to test his limits and push his boundaries.

And boundaries? Well, those were something he’d never believed in, and for once, that little personality flaw was going to work for him instead of against him.

Book Review: Kiss Me in Christmas by Debbie Mason

Kiss Me in Christmas (Christmas, Colorado Series, Book 6)

It's always been you...

Actress Chloe O'Connor has become America's sweetheart, but back in little Christmas, Colorado, she's still remembered as a shy, awkward schoolgirl. And there's no one she dreads (and secretly wants) to see more than her high school crush, Easton McBride. Just one look from the former star quarterback and it's like she's instantly transformed from daytime drama queen to tongue-tied teenager. She's kissed Hollywood actors and famous cover models, so she can certainly play it cool while turning up the heat, right?

After an injury ended his military career, Easton McBride built a good life in the rugged countryside of his hometown. And the last thing he needs is his quiet solitude shattered by a high-maintenance temptress who isn't anything like the sweet Chloe he misses. While he enjoys the flirtation with this new bold and beautiful woman, he can't help but wonder whether a kiss could have the power to bring back the small-town girl he's grown to love.

                              MY REVIEW:

Kiss Me in Christmas (Christmas, Colorado Series, Book 6)Kiss Me in Christmas by Debbie Mason
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is the 6th book of the series and my least favorite. I did not care for the 2 sisters, Chloe and Cat. They acted more like spoiled teenagers than adults. And the 2 brothers they were with should have been smacked upside the head as well. All the other books I loved the brothers and the family dynamics and the women that they fell in love with. I don't know what it was about these women but they just were not right for them. Also for someone who has anxiety I thought it was very wrong of them to not understand where Chloe was coming from not wanting anything to do with her old high school and to force her into a situation she was not comfortable with. No I wasn't bullied in high school but after reading so many books and watching the news, I felt it was totally wrong for no one to understand Chloe's feelings and to tell her to grow up was totally wrong.

Book Review: The Killer In Me by Olivia Kiernan

The Killer in Me (Frankie Sheehan, #2)

A deadly past refuses to stay buried in Olivia Kiernan's masterful new novel

Death is no stranger to Detective Chief Superintendent Frankie Sheehan, but she isn't the only one from her small, coastal suburb to be intimately acquainted with it. Years ago, teenager Sen Hennessey shocked the tight-knit community when he was convicted of the brutal murder of his parents and attempted slaying of his sister, though he always maintained his innocence. Now, Sen is finally being released from prison--but when his newfound freedom coincides with the discovery of two bodies, the alleged connection between the cases only serves to pull Frankie further from answers even as it draws her closer to her town's hidden darkness. With a television documentary revisiting Sen's sentence pushing the public's sympathies into conflict on a weekly basis, a rabid media pressuring the police like never before, and a rising body count, Frankie will need all of her resources if she is not only to catch a killer, but put to rest what really happened all those years ago.

A dark, irresistible cocktail of secrets, murder, and family, Olivia Kiernan's latest is an impossible-to-put-down triumph.

                        MY REVIEW:

The Killer in Me (Frankie Sheehan, #2)The Killer in Me by Olivia Kiernan
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I had a hard time getting into this book and keeping my interest. So many characters and who did what and trying to figure out if there is more than 1 case going on with different killers. Years ago teenager Sean Hennessy is found guilty of killing his parents and leaving his sister for dead. He is just released and now a couple is found dead in a church and another man who was a reporter is also found dead. So did Sean do it? And where is his sister? The police bring in several suspects and but then lead into dead ends. I didn't trust Sean from the beginning but he kept saying he didn't do it and is believable. But is he? By the time I got to the end I didn't really care.
