Loving her is all that I am. She is the flesh and blood savior who lights up my soul. She’s grace and beauty, the source of my addiction. I watch her every move, consume each breath she takes. I won’t live without her touch. She’s in my bed when I close my eyes and there when I wake. But now, my angel lies to me.

Elle secretly investigates the lies left behind by her sister and my brother. She should know better—no space exists between us, no room for secrets. I allow the deception while she searches for answers, but I am always right behind her, eliminating the threats that shadow us. Her discovery? It drives me straight to my knees.

. . . I had somehow found the discipline to wait Ellie out, to give her time to grow and thrive as an individual before allowing my obsession to consume all of her, though I could feel the elasticity of it contracting. My self-discipline had stretched to its limit.

I needed to see her. I would claim one touch, maybe one kiss, then continue protecting her from a distance.

Fucking liar. You’ll take everything from her. Don’t touch.

I shook my head, my deliberations vacillating between what I knew was the truth and what I wanted to do, and jogged out to my car. The town celebration had already started, and this fucking liar wasn’t about to miss an opportunity to see her there.

It didn’t take much time to catch up to her—there she was on the street just a few feet ahead of me. I would recognize her pretty arse anywhere. Stonington’s main streets were narrow, so I retreated into the crowd and crossed to the opposing curb from where I could see her face.

Ellie soon found me and locked her eyes onto mine, and what I discovered in her gaze was staggering. It caused a sharp pain to cut through me as if a blade had pierced my heart.

Abandonment. Loss. She believed she was alone.

I pressed my palm against the center of my chest to ease the abrupt tightness.

Christ, how many times had she been failed?

She worked a second job tending bar for fuck’s sake, and it wasn’t for the money—my father had assured me she had inherited her father’s wealth, which meant she was looking for something or someone to make her feel safe and loved. She’d lost both parents at an early age, and her grandmother visibly held her affection for Ellie at arm’s length. Ellie’s sister, Isobel, seemed to express a maternal regard for her rather than offer the kind of companionship a sibling close in age could provide.

I had no idea how many men had passed through her life, but it was clear none understood who she was or what she needed because she was still alone.

She was practiced at concealing the pain, but beyond the beauty of her green irises, the suffering was there. I could see it and feel it, and in that moment, with our eyes locked, I knew that I would never find the strength to leave the States without her again.

Unrestrained thoughts raced through my head. I opened and closed my hands, flexing my fists as flashes of anger rushed through me. I wanted to kiss away the hurt. I ached to shelter her in my arms. I wanted to bury my cock deep inside of her and show her that she had been found. I lowered my eyes to her lips and smirked at the idea of her releasing all of that pain while screaming my name.

I met her eyes again, my smile fading as something more occurred to me. That she dared to hold my stare for so long revealed strength, but also there was something undeniable about the intensity of her will. Ellie held the power no one before her had ever possessed, and if I wasn’t careful, one day she would wield it to put me on my goddamned knees.

Mine. . . .

                               MY REVIEW:

Closer (Stage Dive, #4.6)Closer by Kylie Scott
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Mae Cooper is a Plus size model and is being stalked so she needs to hire a bodyguard. Ziggy is a former military man turned protection officer. He has been a bodyguard for many people and Billionaires who have lavish parties. But he didn't expect Mae at all. He was a very serious person who hardly cracked a smile. He kept a straight face no matter what Mae said or did.
Mae seemed nice but I never saw her as a Plus size model the way they talked about her she seemed to have a really good body. I must have missed something in the book as I didn't see it.
I laughed quite a bit while reading and this was full of fun, lust and romance plus some suspense thrown in as the stalker kept them on their toes.
I received this from Inkslinger and NetGalley for an honest review.

Book review: Fierce Girl by Emma Tallon

Fierce Girl (Anna Davis #4)

When loyalty is everything, betrayal hits harder.

Anna Davis has grown up. She’s not the naive runaway who escaped her vicious gangland boyfriend anymore. She’s tougher than ever and she won’t let anyone take advantage of her – or the people she loves.

Anna’s devoted boyfriend, East End baron Freddie Tyler, is in trouble. There’s a rat in his organisation and he needs to stop the leaks before a very big mistake from his past is revealed to people who will want swift and brutal revenge.

Anna wants to help Freddie but she’s got problems of her own. Her best friend Tanya’s mother has turned up, and is staking a claim on Tanya’s share of their club. With Tanya buying her mum’s reformed sinner act, Anna knows she needs to act before both their friendship and Club Anya goes up in flames.

But if there’s one thing Anna and Freddie have learned, it’s how to play the game, and as their enemies close in they’ll fight with everything they’ve got to protect the life they’ve built.

                            MY REVIEW:

Fierce Girl (Anna Davis #4)Fierce Girl by Emma Tallon
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This takes off from the last book. Anna is trying to overcome her anxiety from what had happened and dealing with Tanya being in a coma. Then Tanya's mother comes to the hospital saying how sorry she was for the way she treated Tanya as a child. That she stopped drinking and changed. But Anna doesn't believe her and this puts a wedge between the 2 best friends.
Meanwhile Freddie finds out he has a leak in his organization and he needs to find out who it is. Also the mafia is after him because another Mafia king has gone missing in Freddie's territory. Then he hires ex DI to help him.
I may not like the lifestyle of the mafia and organized crime but the family and friendships in this series makes you want to be a part of them. They stick to each other and are there for each other no matter what as long as you do not cross them. Then you better wish you had never been born.
I received this from Bookouture and NetGalley for review.

Blog Tour: The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy

ABOUT THE ORCHID THRONE:

A PRISONER OF FATE

As Queen of the island kingdom of Calanthe, Euthalia will do anything to keep her people
free—and her secrets safe—from the mad tyrant who rules the mainland. Guided by a magic ring of her father’s, Lia plays the political game with the cronies the emperor sends to her island. In her heart, she knows that it’s up to her to save herself from her fate as the emperor’s bride. But in her dreams, she sees a man, one with the power to build a better world—a man whose spirit is as strong, and whose passion is as fierce as her own…

A PRINCE AMONG MEN

Conrí, former Crown Prince of Oriel, has built an army to overthrow the emperor. But he needs the fabled Abiding Ring to succeed. The ring that Euthalia holds so dear to her heart. When the two banished rulers meet face to face, neither can deny the flames of rebellion that flicker in their eyes—nor the fires of desire that draw them together. But in this broken world of shattered kingdoms, can they ever really trust each other? Can their fiery alliance defeat the shadows of evil that threaten to engulf their hearts and souls?

MY REVIEW:

The Orchid Throne (Forgotten Empires, #1)The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

this is the first book of a new series by Jeffe Kennedy. Euthalia is Queen of the Island Kingdom and everything there is peaceful and full of color and flowers. She is guided by a magic ring that was left by her father. She is betrothed to the Emperor but he is not a nice man and she will do anything she can to keep her people safe and not to marry him.
Conri is a former Prince of Oriel and he is building an army to overthrow the emperor and wants the magic ring to help him.
Conri has a bad image and when he shows up to meet with Lia he understands why she feels the way she does about him. But you can feel that there is more to him than meets the eye and he wants to help Lia take down the Emperor.
I really liked getting to know Lia and Conri separately throughout the book and then together as they try to figure out how to both win.
I received this ARC from St. Martin's and NetGalley for review.

EXCERPT

Excerpt from The Orchid Throne by Jeffe Kennedy
“Arise, Your Highness. The realm awaits the sun of Your presence.”
The ritual words cut through the thick smoke of the nightmare, bringing me awake with a start. A bad omen that I hadn’t come out of the dreams on my own—and a sign that gave the images the power to linger in my mind, stains refusing to be scrubbed clean.
The wolf fought its chains, howling in hoarse rage, shedding fire and ash.
The sea churned, bloodred and crimson dark, bones tossed in the waves, white as foam.
The tower fell into a pile of golden rubble, then to fine sand, the grains sliding against one another with soul-grinding whispered screams.
I loathe dreaming, where I have even less control than in the waking world. Calanthe Herself sings sweetly to me of the seas, the plants, and the creatures that walk Her soil. But outside our fragile island, the abandoned lands beyond cry like frightened children in the night. I can’t help them. It’s all I can do to protect Calanthe, and most days I despair of being able to do even that.
Still, with no one else to hear them, they call to me in chaotic images, the nightmares dashing me from one dark scenario to the next. No matter how the dreams plague me, I usually wake when the light of the rising sun reddens my eyelids. I keep my eyes closed, pretending to anyone who checks on me that I’m still asleep. Pulling the pieces of my composure together, I listen to the morning song of Calanthe. The birds sitting high in the canopy to catch the first warming rays of the sun show me the sky. The fish swimming in the sea speak of clean water and plentiful food. Even the trees, the flowers, the small insects in the soil all hum to me of their lives.
All reassure me of the balance, that Calanthe, at least, is peaceful and vital.
Only I and the land I’m tied to exist in that time after sleep and before true waking, in what I call the dreamthink, an almost enchanted bubble where I belong entirely to Calanthe. The emperor does not own me. The crying lands he’s orphaned are silent. My ladies have not yet woken me to wrenching reality and the trials of the day ahead.
Dreams always seem to me a terrible price to pay for the succor of sleep. Neither my naturalists nor my physicians seem to be able to explain the purpose of such dreams. And of course, Anure killed all the wizards, so I have none to tell me if magic can answer those nighttime screams. So without answers, and like the exorbitant tithes I’m forced to send to the emperor, I do pay the price, and nightly. The dreamthink is my reward, my time with Calanthe. A gift arising from waking Ejarat of the earth welcoming the return of Her husband, Sawehl of the sun. In the dreamthink, in Calanthe’s sweet communion, I can believe the old gods are with us still, that they haven’t abandoned us. That I have reason to hope.
“Euthalia, wake up. We’re ready,” Tertulyn whispered in my ear. My first lady-in-waiting, doing her duty as always. She couldn’t know she’d woken me from the nightmare instead of the dreamthink. Or that starting my day this way meant it would be certainly cursed.
No one believes in omens or curses anymore. Or hope, for that matter. In this, too, I am alone.
Euthalia is a mouthful, but no one calls me that except for Tertulyn so it doesn’t matter. Only Emperor Anure has the rank to address me by my given name, and I avoid conversation with His Imperial Nastiness to the best of my ability. Tertulyn has called me by my name since we were children, but only when no one can overhear, as etiquette demands.
As if she’d whispered them into my ear along with my name, the concerns of the realm immediately flooded my mind. The emperor’s emissary should have returned in the night and would want an audience with me—something I’d been dreading, as he never brought good news. Rumors had spread of slave uprisings, possibly even rebellion, as unlikely as that would be, that had the emperor both angry and insecure in his power. The worst possible combination in a man like him.
If I believed a rebellion could succeed, I would rejoice in the battle to come. But I had no hope of that. No one could defy Anure’s vast power and ability to destroy the least whimper of resistance, as all those kingless and queenless lands testified, crying their hopelessness to me every night.
No, such rumors meant the Imperial Tyrant would only tighten his fist—one that already strangled us nearly to death. The prospect of worse to come made me inexpressibly weary, and I hadn’t even gotten out of bed yet.
Nevertheless, I had to face the day. A realm awaited the sun of my presence, after all.
I opened my eyes and pasted a serene smile on my lips.
Tertulyn—already wigged, gowned, and decked in fresh flowers—stood a decorous three steps back from my bed, hands folded over her heart. All equally polished and lovely as morning dew, my five junior ladies awaited in a ring around her. They’d all been up since well before dawn to dress themselves before attending me. And yet their eyes sparkled as brightly as the birds that had shown me the sun on the sea, pretty painted lips curved in delighted smiles. Though I was only twenty-six, they made me feel old.

If a witch offered me a magic potion to remove the last ten years and restore my youth—and the innocent belief I’d had then, that my life would be a good one—I’d down it without question. Even if it meant my death the next day. No, that was a lie. I would never shirk my duty to Calanthe, not even for such a fantasy. Not without an heir to take my place. No matter how old and tired I felt.

Excerpt

She motioned to the table. “Let’s eat!”
He joined her and found it hard to focus on the food in front of him—he was still in awe of the transformation of the house. “I can’t believe you pulled this off.”
She smiled and picked up her burger. “I’m extremely organized and efficient. In other words, I had a plan.”
Picking up his own burger, he looked at her and saw how pleased she was, unsure if it was because of a job well-done or the greasy treat she was eating. His stomach growled, and he needed to ignore how unhealthy the meal was and just…go for it. “Well, color me impressed,” he said, referring to her, but realized it could also have meant the meal.
It was surprisingly good.
And satisfying.
When neither had spoken for several minutes because they were too busy eating, Emery leaned over and said, “Welcome to the Dark Side. We have empty calories.”
Carter almost choked on his food but managed to swallow it down before reaching for his drink. Her sense of humor was something he was finding to be utterly charming.
Add that to the list.
There was no time to dwell on it, however, because he was almost done with his burger and was seriously enjoying it.
Now that deserved some dwelling.
“Admit it,” Emery said from beside him, leaning back in her chair. “You enjoyed it.”
“Never.”
She laughed, husky and sexy, and…he seriously needed a distraction.
Reaching over, she looked in the second bag and then gave him a knowing glance. “Who are these chicken nuggets for?”
“Oh, um… I thought you might like them,” he said, not wanting to look at her. Carter busied himself with finishing his fries—which were salted to perfection.
“Hmm. I don’t know if I could eat them right now.” He heard her rummaging around in the bag again. “And what about this? Is this some sort of apple pie?”
Busted!
“Maybe.”
She laughed again—loud and hearty. “Carter Montgomery, you better admit right now that you bought all of this for you because you remember what it’s like to eat like a normal person!”
He lost the battle with his own laughter. “I will do no such thing.”
Standing, Emery took the bag with the extra food and made her way across the kitchen. “Well then, as much as I appreciate the thought, I’m way too full to eat another bite, so…I’ll just throw this out.”
“Wait…what?” he cried, coming to his feet. “Why would you do that?”
With a careless shrug, she replied, “These things never reheat well, so it’s pointless to save it. Besides, what do you care? I can give you the five bucks they cost you, if you’d like.” The bag was dangling over the trash pail, and the look on her face was full of challenge.
And amusement.
“Emery,” he began as he took a step toward her. “Just…put the bag down.”
“And nobody gets hurt?” she teased before letting out a very feminine giggle.
Deciding to stall, Carter studied her. “I just hate to see food go to waste.”
“All you have to do is admit you got it for you. Just say the words and I’ll put the food back on the table.” She shook the bag for good measure. “Come on. I dare you.”
Those were fighting words.
Before he could question it, he lunged for her and Emery let out a high-pitched squeal before taking off around the kitchen island. By their third time around, Carter caught her around the waist and spun her while she cried out, “Uncle! Uncle!” They were both laughing hysterically by the time he collapsed back in his chair with her in his lap. It took several minutes for them to calm down.
“Man, you just cannot stand to be proven wrong,” she said, but made no attempt to move from the circle of his arms.
This was dangerous territory. He knew that. It felt far too good to hold her. Turning his head, he inhaled the smell of her shampoo, daring to lean in further until his lips were touching her ear.
Softly, he murmured, “Just give me the apple pie, and nobody gets hurt.”
It was meant to be funny—a small joke to go along with all the teasing they’d been doing—but it didn’t feel so funny when Emery let out a low moan at his words.
“Make me,” she whispered, and—holy crap. It was all Carter could do not to haul her over his shoulder and take her inside to his bedroom.
Her name came out as a plea as Carter ran his tongue along the shell of her ear. Emery trembled in his arms as they tightened around her. The bag fell to the floor and she shifted ever so slightly so they were nose to nose. Then it was her turn to sigh his name. Her hand came up and cupped his cheek, and for a moment, he was afraid to move. Afraid to breathe. He didn’t want to risk doing anything to break the spell or ruin the moment.
It would kill him.
Reaching up, he mimicked her pose by cupping her cheek. He owed it to her to be honest.
“This isn’t about making either of us stop talking,” he said gruffly. “This is about me kissing you because I have to.”
Slowly, Emery licked her lips. “Good.”
It was as if everything happened in slow motion from there—like they were being drawn together by forces beyond their control, and when their lips touched, they both sighed and eased into it.
All Carter could think was how this was possibly his sweetest victory ever with Emery—knowing she wanted his kiss just as much as he needed to kiss her.
