Book Review: Wicked Prey by John Sandford

Wicked Prey (Lucas Davenport, #19)

Danger stalks Lucas Davenport at work and all too close to home, in the superlative new thriller by the #1 "New York Times"-bestselling author.
For twenty years, John Sandford's novels have been beloved for their "ingenious plots, vivid characters, crisp dialogue and endless surprises" ("The Washington Post"), and nowhere are those more in evidence than in the sudden twists and shocks of "Wicked Prey."
The Republicans are coming to St. Paul for their convention. Throwing a big party is supposed to be fun, but crashing the party are a few hard cases the police would rather stayed away. Chief among them is a crew of professional stickup men who've spotted several lucrative opportunities, ranging from political moneymen with briefcases full of cash to that armored-car warehouse with the weakness in its security system. All that's headache enough for Lucas Davenport-but what's about to hit him is even worse.
A while back, a stray bullet put a pimp and petty thief named Randy Whitcomb in a wheelchair, and, ever since, the man has been nursing his grudge into a full head of psychotic steam. He blames Davenport for the bullet, but it's no fun just shooting him. That wouldn't be painful enough. Not when Davenport has a pretty fourteen-year-old adopted daughter that Whitcomb can target instead. . . .
And then there's the young man with the .50 caliber sniper rifle and the right- wing-crazy background, roaming through a city filled with the most powerful politicians on earth. . . .

                                      MY REVIEW:

Wicked Prey (Lucas Davenport, #19)Wicked Prey by John Sandford
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
The 19th book of this series. It had been a few years since I read the other books of the series and once I started reading I remembered more and more about Lucas Davenport. There is a Republican Convention going on and they are being targeted by thieves. These thieves do not care if they have to kill and who they have to kill to get their marks. Meanwhile Lucas has another person to contend with. Randy is a a pimp and in a wheelchair because of a bullet that he blames Lucas for. He is out for revenge and sees Luca's soon to be adopted daughter as revenge.
Letty is 15 and to be adopted by Lucas but seems to have a head full of no fear and out to protect her family, no matter what. She keeps secrets and lies to do what she needs to. She also works at Channel 3 news station and uses that for cover. I really liked her but was worried for her safety. Can't wait to read the next book to see what kind of trouble she will stir up next.

From New York Times Bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti, comes VENGEANCE, a new novella in her Dark Protectors and Rebels Series, brought to you by 1,001 Dark Nights! Be sure to grab your copy today!

About VENGEANCE:

From New York Times bestselling author, Rebecca Zanetti, comes a new Dark Protectors/Rebels Novella…

Vengeance and revenge are the only forces driving vampire soldier Noah Siosal since losing his brother to an enemy he’s been unable to find. He’s searched every corner of the globe, going through adversaries and piling up bodies until finally getting a lead. The last place he wants to be is in a ridiculous anger management group with people expressing feelings instead of taking action. Until one fragile human, a green-eyed sweetheart being stalked by danger, catches his eye. One touch, and he realizes vengeance can’t be anywhere near her.

Anger and self-preservation are the only motivations Abby Miller needs or wants right now. Falsely accused of attacking the man who’s terrorized her for years, she’s forced as a plea bargain to attend an anger management counseling group with people with some serious rage issues, while learning true self defense on the side. Yet a man, one more primal than any she’s ever met, draws her in a way and into a world deadlier than she’s ever imagined. He offers her protection, but she finds the fight is really for his heart, and she’s ready to battle.

MY REVIEW:

Vengeance (Dark Protectors #10.5)Vengeance by Rebecca Zanetti
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Noah is a vampire soldier bent on revenge and Vengeance since losing his brother to an enemy. Now he is in an anger management group upon learning about a lead. Then he meets up with Abby who is in anger management that is court appointed. Abby was married to to an abusive man for several years and got away and divorced him. But he is still after her and says she is still his wife and he is friends with the judge and sheriff, which makes it even more complicated for her. But the chemistry between Noah and Abby is hot. There are also a few other characters that are vampires and demons which make this story fun. Noah also has a new mark on his hand which lets him know he has met his mate and vampires mate for life. What will Abby think when she finds out he is a vampire? This was a novella so it was a short book to read.

EXCERPT:

His hand slid around her face and tangled in her hair, tilting her head back farther.
She sighed and kissed him, warming right up. Her eyelids opened to see his intense gaze on her. She jerked, her body stilling.
Holding her gaze, he lifted lightly, his lips barely a whisper from hers. “You okay?”
She nodded, even though his hand in her hair contained her movement. “Yes. You?”
“Yes. You want more?” He held himself still, like one of those racehorses in a stall right before the gate opened.
Her nipples peaked. Fast and hard. More? There was more? She should think. Take a step back. “Yes,” she said. “More.”
He moved faster than humanly possible, ducking his head and claiming her lips. This time, there was no gentleness or coaxing. It was all fire and electricity and demand. Hard and fast, he took her mouth, kissing her in a way that took her completely out of the moment.
The rain and cold disappeared along with her fear and sadness. Only passion and fire remained. She let him guide her, opening her mouth, wanting everything he was giving. Never had she felt this. Her body went from a slow heat to a full-on inferno, her thighs trembling for more of him. For all of him.
Headlights barely caught her attention. Then a door slamming. “What the hell?” bellowed a familiar male voice.
She jumped, fear instantly swamping her. “No.”
Noah released her and turned as Monte stomped toward them, fury morphing into red blotches on a face she’d once thought handsome. “What are you doing?” he yelled, arms swinging, getting too close.
Noah partially turned and punched him right in the mouth. Monte went down, splashing through a mudpuddle, his arms windmilling.

Abby gasped, her body chilling instantly. Horror caught her. Oh God. “What have you done?”

Book Review: Red Velvet Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke

Red Velvet Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen, #16)

This summer has been warmer than usual in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and Hannah Swensen is trying to beat the heat both in and out of her bakery kitchen. But she's about to find out the hard way that nothing cools off a hot summer day like cold-blooded murder. . .
It's a hot, muggy evening, and the last thing Hannah wants to do is squeeze into a pair of pantyhose for the Grand Opening of the refurbished Albion Hotel. But with Hannah's famous Red Velvet cupcakes being served in the hotel's new Red Velvet lounge, she can't bring herself to back out.

The party starts off with a bang with the unexpected arrival of Doctor Bev, a Lake Eden legend who left town in shame after she two-timed her fiancé one too many times. Bev's splashy appearance on the arm of a wealthy investor is the talk of the night. But the gossip comes to a screeching halt when a partygoer takes a mysterious dive off the hotel's rooftop garden.

The victim is the sheriff's secretary, Barbara Donnelly, and she is barely clinging to life. The question is, did she fall--or was she pushed? As the police investigate, the only one who isn't preoccupied with the case is Doctor Bev. She's too busy trying to stir things up with her old flame Norman, who's reunited with Hannah.

Just as Hannah's patience with Bev runs dangerously thin, her rival is found dead at the bottom of Miller's Pond. The only clue the police have is the Red Velvet cupcake Bev ate right before she died--and the tranquilizers someone seems to have baked into it. To everyone's shock, Hannah is now the unlikely target of a murder investigation--and she's feeling the heat in a way she never has before. .

                            MY Review:

Red Velvet Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen, #16)Red Velvet Cupcake Murder by Joanne Fluke
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Hannah is at it again. Trying to solve a case, but not being a part of the police force. This time she is also a suspect. Her relationship with both the men in her life is the only thing not giving this series a better review. They both love her and she has been proposed to. After so many time and so ling this has been going on I find it a little ridiculous that she can;t commit to one man. Kind of leaving them both dangling. But the storyline itself is very good. Barbar takes a head dive off a building and we aren't sure if she fell or was pushed. She can't talk right so they can't make heads or tails out of some of her clues. On top of that Dr. Bev, who no one really likes also is found dead and Hannah becomes a suspect. I actually seemed to like Hannah's mother better in this book. Past books she has made me cringe and want to slap her.
I listened to this as an audiobook.

He finally caught sight of Moira again and followed. If she was working, she had an odd way of doing her job. She stopped to pet every dog that walked in her path. By the time he caught up with her, she was crouched on the ground nose to nose with a beast of an animal. The dog looked big enough that it could easily maul her, but she cooed and giggled when the thing licked her face.

Jimmy tucked his hands in his pockets and watched for a minute. Moira interacted with the dog like she’d found a long lost best friend. She laughed and played and looked completely out of place with all of the other women. She sighed and stood, taking a moment to brush dog hair off her dress.

When the dog walker moved on, he sidled up next to Moira and tried to hold on to his anger. If he let the gooey look on her face affect him, he’d be useless. “We need to talk.”

She looked up at him, using one hand to shield her eyes from the setting sun. “I thought we already did. Do you want to set up that interview now?” Her eyes held an evil glimmer, as if she knew what he’d said to Stan about the interview.

He grabbed her elbow and guided her away from the crowd, around the back of the tent that held the auction items. Fighting to keep his voice low, he said, “Why the hell would you tell everyone I have a wife?”

She eased her arm from his grasp and narrowed her eyes. He’d expected the sweet fuck-you smile she liked to throw out when she caused trouble. “You have no idea who you’re hanging out with, but I do. Those four are all married. They bring their wives to every function and event. Or I should say their wives bring them. They stand around and ogle every female in sight.”

“Yeah, I got that.”

“The thing is, if you want in, the wives are going to have to approve. The wives like Mayor Park since he’s such a good wholesome guy, so they’ll be inclined to accept you, but in their world, having a wife makes you safer.”

“Safer?”

“Less likely to bring a bunch of single women around, making it easier for their husbands to cheat.”

“They’re surrounded by women at these events.”

“I didn’t say it made sense. Their friendship extends beyond attending fund-raisers. The wives are here to keep an eye on them, but they don’t follow them everywhere. At least I don’t think they do.” She shifted so his shadow blocked the sun and looked up at his face. “I’m not trying to screw things up for you. Trust me. I understand these people.”

He believed her, but it didn’t make the truth any easier. “Where the hell am I supposed to get a wife?”

She huffed out a breath. “Am I supposed to do everything for you?”

Her irritation wouldn’t last. She had a hot temper, but once it blew, she went back to being sunny Moira. And she wasn’t even pissed right now, so when she turned to walk away, he followed.

He walked beside her, as if they were there together, which he knew he shouldn’t, but since she’d talked about interviewing him, he figured he could get away with it. She waved to various people and stopped to chat with others.

With Moira, though, it wasn’t bullshit small talk. She asked real questions. She knew details about people’s lives, and they respected her for it. They opened up around her, which would be a huge asset for her job. An asset he’d have to avoid.

When they were walking a stretch alone, he asked, “Why doesn’t it bother you?”

“What?”

“The way Stan Decker talks about you.” Remembering the comments made him angry again. “I know you heard him, but you acted like it was nothing.”

She shrugged. “Because it was nothing.”

He stopped and touched her arm to halt her. “That’s not true. No one should talk to you like that.”

“He wasn’t talking to me. It’s not his fault I have excellent hearing.”

Jimmy thought back. In truth, Stan had been respectful, at least in his words while talking to Moira. “He stares at your chest.”

She laughed so hard her shoulders shook. “Really?” She spread her hands in front of her chest. “He’s far from the only man to do that. It happens so often, it doesn’t faze me anymore.”

Jimmy made a point of looking into her bright blue eyes. No sign of anger or hurt. It would make him nuts if he saw men staring at his woman’s chest instead of her face.

But Moira’s not mine.

“Doesn’t make it right.”

EXCERPT:

One firm knuckle lifted her chin, and she fought him, but finally faced his dark eyes. God, she was exhausted. She’d fight again tomorrow. Tonight, she needed sleep.

His gaze searched her face. “The keys are in the ignition. Take the truck and go wherever you want. You can borrow it until I get your tires fixed.” He started to take a step back.

Going against all reason, she grabbed the hem of his shirt and pulled him toward her. “I-I can’t take your truck.” What the heck was he talking about?

He sighed, his body rolling with the movement. “Listen. You’re cold and scared, and you need to get warm. You’re frightened of me, so I’m letting you take my truck to get to safety. Now go, and I’ll handle your tires.”

The words barely computed. She swallowed, looking up at his strong jawline. With the darkness behind him, he appeared even larger than usual, as if that were possible. He’d carried her through the storm, and now he was letting her go. He’d asked for nothing. So she levered up and kissed him.

Shock ripped through her system from one touch.

He jerked and another low growl rumbled up from his chest.

She leaned back, her mouth opened in an ‘o’, her body flashing hot in a way she’d never felt before. Wild and free and alive. Dangerously on the edge of something...new.

His jaw ticked. Tension rolled off him, steaming up the windows, even though the door remained open.

She gingerly reached up and touched her still sparking bottom lip, her gaze seeking his. Had he felt that? If so, what the heck was it? “Who are you?” she asked.

He barked out a laugh and slid one firm hand along her face. The entire side of her face. “I’m the guy you just kissed. Kind of. Care to explain why?”

“Kind of?” She barely kept herself from turning into that heated palm. “What do you mean? Kind of?”

His chin lifted just enough. “That wasn’t a kiss, baby. Not even close.”

Don’t say it. Don’t say it. For the love of all that is holy and sane, don’t say it. “What is a kiss?” she asked. Yep. She’d said it.

“You want me to show you?” he rumbled, his eyes somehow looking even darker than usual.

No. Definitely no. Not in a million years. “Yes,” she whispered.

He didn’t ask twice. Leaning down, he drew her partially up, and his lips took hers. Firm and warm, he kissed her, the touch gentle velvet over hard steel. His lips molded to hers, softly probing, sliding warmth down her jawline to touch every inch of her body.

She sighed, leaning up, opening her mouth in acceptance. Her eyelashes fluttered shut, and she let herself just feel. Something good and strong and hot. Then she tentatively kissed him back.

Book Review: Second Chance Cowboy by AJ Pine

Second Chance Cowboy (Crossroads Ranch, #1)

Ten years ago, Jack Everett left his family's ranch without a backward glance. Now, what was supposed to be a quick trip home for his father's funeral has suddenly become more complicated. The ranch Jack can handle---he might be a lawyer, but he still remembers how to work with his hands. But turning around the failing vineyard he's also inherited? That requires working with the one woman he never expected to see again.

Ava Ellis broke her own heart the night she let Jack go. She was young and scared---and secretly pregnant with Jack's baby. Now that he's back and asking for her help, Ava sees her opportunity to right the wrongs of the past. But how will he feel about the son he's never known? Could this be their second chance---or their final heartbreak?

Second Chance Cowboy (Crossroads Ranch, #1)Second Chance Cowboy by A.J. Pine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
10 years ago Jack left town. He comes back now for his father's funeral. He has inherited a vineyard on top of the ranch he had left behind. Jack and Ava dated back in high school and she let him go 10 years ago. They now come face to face 10 years later. She was pregnant back then but didn't let Jack know. Now Ava wants to let him know about the son they had together but will it ruin anything that might be between them. You can still see the chemistry between Ava and Jack. You also meet Jack's brothers and an Aunt who had raised him. We also meet Ava's parents. Her dad hates Jack and doesn't want him in the son's life. Jack comes from an abused household and he is trying to overcome his childhood. As I kept reading this I could not put it down and I really wanted Ava's father to listen to her and Jack and the type of man he is. He is not the same person he was in high school.

Josie is an editor in NY. She went to the small town of Sweetwater Springs for vacation at her best friend's B&B. She takes a small hike on a trail and slips and falls, hurting her knee. She meets the PT that will be helping her heal her knee. Tuck had been the one to pick Josie up at the airport, and it wasn't a good first impression. Now he is her PT and the sparks are there. But Josie plans on going back to NY and her job and does not want to be in a relationship. Tuck is mending his heart from when his wife passed away a couple of years ago. This town has a lot to offer and I feel like it would be a great place to live and be a part of the community. I enjoyed the 1st book of this series and am ready for the next book

Book Review: Top Secret Twenty-One by Janet Evanovich

Top Secret Twenty-One (Stephanie Plum, #21)

Trenton, New Jersey’s favorite used-car dealer, Jimmy Poletti, was caught selling a lot more than used cars out of his dealerships. Now he’s out on bail and has missed his date in court, and bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is looking to bring him in. Leads are quickly turning into dead ends, and all too frequently into dead bodies. Even Joe Morelli, the city’s hottest cop, is struggling to find a clue to the suspected killer’s whereabouts. These are desperate times, and they call for desperate measures. So Stephanie is going to have to do something she really doesn’t want to do: protect former hospital security guard and general pain in her behind Randy Briggs. Briggs was picking up quick cash as Poletti’s bookkeeper and knows all his boss’s dirty secrets. Now Briggs is next on Poletti’s list of people to put six feet under.

To top things off, Ranger—resident security expert and Stephanie’s greatest temptation—has been the target of an assassination plot. He’s dodged the bullet this time, but if Ranger wants to survive the next attempt on his life, he’ll have to enlist Stephanie’s help and reveal a bit more of his mysterious past.

Death threats, highly trained assassins, highly untrained assassins, and Stark Street being overrun by a pack of feral Chihuahuas are all in a day’s work for Stephanie Plum. The real challenge is dealing with her Grandma Mazur’s wild bucket list. A boob job and getting revenge on Joe Morelli’s Grandma Bella can barely hold a candle to what’s number one on the list—but that’s top secret.

Book Review: The Highland Duke by Amy Jarecki

The Highland Duke (Lords of the Highlands #1)

She'll put her life on the line for him . . .
When Akira Ayres finds the brawny Scot with a musket ball in his thigh, the healer has no qualms about doing whatever it takes to save his life. Even if it means fleeing with him across the Highlands to tend to his wounds while English redcoats are closing in. Though Akira is as fierce and brave as any of her clansmen, even she's intimidated by the fearsome, brutally handsome Highlander who refuses to reveal his name.

Yet she can never learn his true identity.
Geordie knows if Akira ever discovers he's the Duke of Gordon, both her life and his will be forfeit in a heartbeat. The only way to keep the lass safe is to ensure she's by his side day and night. But the longer he's with her, the harder it becomes to think of letting her go. Despite all their differences, despite the danger-he will face death itself to make her his . . .

"Readers get all the benefits of a modern road trip (forced proximity, lots and lots of dialogue, and uninterrupted time for the hero and heroine's love to grow) without technology or secondary characters interrupting the main story arc. About halfway through there is a pretty darn huge plot twist, too. This book kept me on my toes and anxious for more." --Book Riot

Akira finds Geordie with a musket ball in his leg so she nurses him back to health as she is a healer. Where she comes from there is no money and her 2 sister and herself share a bed and their mother sleeps on a pallet on the floor. Bur Geordie pays her enough for them to eat for a year. Then she finds out who he really is and she is upset because he hid his name and being a duke. The banter between these 2 were funny at times and the relationship growing between them was fun to watch as well. No matter how many times they were seperated Geordie always made sure he was able to rescue her. The love story between these 2 was so heartfelt because of their backgrounds. He is a Duke , divorced with 2 children and not allowed to marry again, let alone a "Gypsy". The ex wife in this book is just a wench. She is mean spirited and I don't think her kids even like her. I will continue on
with this series.

Blog Tour Review: Only With You by Layla Hagen

The next book in Layla Hagen's Connor Family series, ONLY WITH YOU, is available today! Be sure to pick up your copy now and fall in love with Val and Carter!

About ONLY WITH YOU

Carter Sloane is famous for one thing: winning cases. He's sharp, astute, and always gets his way. In his private life, he's constantly fumbling his way around when it comes to raising his two nieces.
When he moves into a new office, he just can't take his eyes off the fiercely independent woman across the street. He'd love to touch and kiss that irresistible body.
Valentina "Val" Connor is proud of her booming fragrance company. If only she were half as successful in her love life… Between trusting the wrong men and sheer bad luck, Val is convinced she'll never find the one.
However, the sexy lawyer in the neighborhood with his sophisticated charm and sex-appeal is hell bent on proving to her that she's wrong. Val's senses warn her to stay away from men like him-even if her body is begging her to cave.
But when she finds out about Carter's nieces, she steps in to help, doting on them with love and care. She can't believe that the same man who is usually in control is completely in over his head with the girls.
But as Val and Carter grow closer, one thing is clear to him: He'd move mountains to make her happy, but with Val's career soaring, how can he ask her to commit to the chaos of his life?

MY REVIEW:

Only With You by Layla Hagen
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Carter is a lawyer who is raising his nieces, after their parent's death. Val is the owner of her blooming fragrance company. They meet in a coffee shop and things sizzle between them. Val has had bad luck in relationships so she isn't sure what to think of Carter and if he is the real deal. She falls for his nieces and helps when she can. She is also being sued by another company saying she stole their ideas for an upcoming product.
This may be the 4th book of a series but it didn't feel like it. You still got to meet all of Val's family and how close they are and their relationships. I really liked how Carter made Val feel special and how he always thought of her and the little things he did for her. This is one book I could not put down.
Thank you to Inkslinger for giving me this ARC for review.
