My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jonathan Lake is the NYC Mayor and running for Governor. He is a widow with an adult daughter. Alyssa Block is his assistant for a couple of years. She has kept a very strict business relationship with the mayor. As they go away for the holidays things heat up between them. He wants to get to know her and she says no way because it will cause scandal. She has secretly kept her feelings to herself.
I enjoyed the 2 characters and how they want to deal with their feelings for each other. You know how the press will be if a relationship comes out between them and then her being labeled sleeping to the top. But she has been friends with his daughter and other people in his life and they are all for them to be together.

The Quiet Girls: An absolutely addictive mystery thriller by J.M.  Hewitt

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Detective Carrie Flynn's sister was abducted when they were both little girls and Carrie can't remember that day or the man's face. Now it is 20 years later and 11 year old Melanie is missing. Carrie is determined to find out what happened. The police had mysterious phone calls coming in from a young woman saying she told them things and they didn't do anything about it so she is going to take matters into her own hands.
But Melanie is with her family and another family on a deserted Island. To start a new life with just the basics. Only Melanie stumbles upon something that is scary and she knows they are in danger.
Melanie's father has lost his grip on reality and things only seem to get worse for everyone on this island and the other family seems to be in danger as well.
I really enjoyed this book and getting to know Detective Carrie Flynn. Also how Melanie's mom could be fooled into moving on this Island is beyond me. She should have put her foot down when all this nonsense started.

“Head out? Where are we?” That trickle of unease bloomed in her heart, her breath catching. Because his words were different. Somehow, he was speaking in a lilting but foreign language, and she’d not only understood every single word, but had answered in the same language.

To distract herself and, well, because her stomach chose that moment to growl, as if it knew she’d just been handed food and was all, Gimme, woman, she took a bite of bread.

The yeasty flavor burst on her tongue, along with the taste and crunch of oodles of grains. No dream she’d ever had was this vivid. The details were sharp, down to her being cold. And to the odd taste and texture of the bread. And her hunger.

The taste, though—a fuzzy memory poked. She took another bite, trying to chase it. Whatever it was, it had been buried so far in her past she couldn’t form it. Except for a fleeting, wonderful feeling of being cherished.

“Aye, we need to break camp and head to my tribe’s stronghold. And we’re in a land called Scotland.”

She swallowed, trying to work moisture into her parched throat. “How long will it take to get to your…stronghold?”

“Only part of the morning.”

“How many hours?”

“Hours?”

“Yeah, how long? How many hours?” Was her Star Trek Universal Translator on the fritz already? The word “hours” had come out in English.

He shook his head and frowned. Then he pointed to the sun just barely visible as a pale glow behind morning clouds. “As long as it takes the sun to travel from there”—he slid his finger just a few inches away—“to there.”

She pulled in a deep breath. Oookay.

He marched over to a shaggy brown horse, grabbed the saddle, and swung himself up into it with one swift motion, like she’d seen in old cowboy movies.

Wow, that was hot.

She’d ridden her share of horses growing up in Nebraska but had never perfected that technique. She stepped up to her horse and stroked its mane, pulling in the musky scent of the beast, letting him smell her, adjust to her. The animal’s fur was thick and curly, its coarse hairs springing through her stroking fingers.

She stared at the imposing but gentle Highlander, and then at the horse she was supposed to ride. If she did as he asked, she’d no longer be “playing along” with her dream. Loved this book. Stephen is a bachelor who is married to his career. His father is a successful billionaire and Stephen works along side him. His father said to get over himself or get out of the family business. So Stephen goes to Maui and do some soul searching. While there he meets the caretaker,Skye, who he is attracted to. He overhears a conversation between here and her ex that she need to bring a date to his wedding.
He is also there to scope out property for a client which also will case trouble between Skye and Stephen. Stephen also is thinking of going out on his own in business.
These 2 are funny together and he really stands up for her when she needs to have someone in her corner.

Hitching the Cowboy by Kennedy Fox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I read this in 1 sitting. Could not put down!
Diesel wants to go to Vegas with his best friend/roommate, Riley and get drunk and have some fun. These 2 are always daring each other and if you don't take the dare then you have to do something else, like either pay the other person money or moon people. So when they get to Vegas the dares start.
Riley works on his families ranch and Diesel works for them.
At the same time there is a bachelorette party for Summer by her friends and sister, Zoe.
Zoe can never please her parents, who are controlling freaks and tell her what she should do with her life and who she should marry. Summer seems to be the pride of the family Zoe just wants to have fun but when her and Riley see each other across a room and their eyes meet you see the sparks fly.
What happens after that I can't tell you so you have to read it but I really want to be a part of Riley's family. It is unconditional love and alot of support and protectiveness, which isn't at all controlling. I don't really want to live on a farm or work on a farm but these cowboys might change your mind or the family will.
This was well written and I am so glad to have received this as an ARC. I can't wait to see when the next book comes out.
