“Leave. Go do your usual Friday night stuff. I’m sure it
involves dating and normalcy and having fun. Don’t come here out of obligation
to spend some pity time with a middle-aged, boring, frump of a woman -”
“Hey!” he yelled, his fist closing in around the blanket. He
waited as she stared back in surprise. “Are you done yet?”
“Maybe,” she hissed because she suddenly couldn’t catch her
breath.
He set the blanket down and then climbed the few steps
before sitting down beside her. “Let’s make one thing clear. I’m here because I
want to be. And middle-aged? I’m older than you. By a decade. Frump of a woman?
Honey, you have no idea just who you are, do you?”
Before she could ask what he meant, he leaned in and kissed
her. Gently, hesitantly and then he drew back to study her. With a slight grin,
a muffled curse, he kissed her again, this time with more urgency, hunger… as
if he had been waiting to do just what he was doing.
Ella felt her body betray her by leaning into him, her arms
lacing around his neck without her permission. She felt like she was made of
air and yet could not sit up on her own. She felt his hands on her back, two
hot spots that seared through her shirt and reached her racing blood. This was
just some type of retaliation for her kiss in the store, she told herself. This
was not real.
And then it was over. She felt cold, exposed as he pulled
away, although his hands remained. “Dammit.”
