Book Review: My Christmas Darling by Vivien Mayfair

My Christmas Darling

Escape to snow-blanketed Manhattan in December where chestnuts roast on street vendor carts, visitors ice skate under the stars, Santa roams Times Square in a sleigh, and storefronts brim with twinkle lights. Let Christmas warm you all year round in this sweet, wholesome, holiday romance that is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

Christmas has come to New York, but it doesn’t feel very festive for Lucy Carpenter. Single, disgruntled in love from past hurts, she disappears into the world of books as a manuscript reader for a mid-level publishing company on the East Side. Plagued with guilt for a mistake that took her mom’s eyesight, Lucy dreams of achieving financial success despite growing medical bills and unpaid rent. Her only hope of survival is to publish her little Christmas novel despite repeat rejections by big publishers. When her boss requests her publishing recommendations for the month, Lucy submits her manuscript under a false identity against strict company guidelines in what becomes the great holiday literary hoax of Manhattan where lies spin out of control and stockings are filled with coal.

Known as the ice fish of Big Apple Books, William Harcourt longs for acceptance from a nitpicky father who rules the publishing industry with an iron fist. When a sweet Christmas manuscript about a father and daughter in a fictional book town crosses his desk, he believes it to be the ticket that will bring his company into the Top Five and finally gain him his father’s love. What he didn’t expect was to fall in love over email with an enchanting mystery author whose book thawed his wounded heart and opened his eyes to the true meaning of self-acceptance and self-love. My Christmas Darling is a heartwarming holiday romance to remind us why we love Christmas. This adorable love story draws you in fireside and proves how the spirt of the season goes beyond pretty-wrapped packages under a tree.

As things go on there is violence in the house and only Frankie seems to understand what is going on.

About TWIST OF FATE:

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes a new story in her Heartbreaker Bay series…

When the one you want …

Daisy doesn’t believe love is ever-lasting, so it’s ironic as hell that she parlayed a business degree into a wedding planning business. More ironic still is her latest job bringing her back into contact with the man who’d taught her that love can’t last.

Is the one you can’t have…

To say Diego has been taught the hard way to bury emotions is an understatement. But when he’s called home to help the brother he hasn’t seen or spoken to in years, that’s one thing. It’s another entirely to also come face to face with the first woman he ever loved. First and only…

Can love conquer all?

Daisy’s learned to depend only on herself, and Diego is and always has been an island of one. And yet when they’re together, even when they’re bickering, still wary and haunted by memories of what was … it’s magic. The question is, how to find their way back to each other…?

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Twist of Fate (Heartbreaker Bay, #8.5)Twist of Fate by Jill Shalvis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a quick novella and I enjoyed it.
Diego's brother is getting married and his fiance Tyler wants Diego to have lunch with them to discuss the wedding. Diego and his brother have been estranged for many years, since their dad had died. Daisy, who is Diego's ex and the wedding planner get put together during this wedding event and it looks like the married couple is playing cupid. Diego and Daisy never got over each other and he feels she upped and ran away from him and she felt that he was ignoring her and that's why she left. Then the 2 brothers need to put aside their feelings and to cope with them and talk things through. If they had communicated all along they wouldn't have been estranged.
I received this ARC from Inkslinger.

Black Crow

Raising the dead is just the beginning.

Selena is a necromancer but hiding her talent is priority one. She works in a small diner as a fry cook with her best friend, only raising the dead when the magic becomes too much and always in secret.

But all that changes when someone starts leaving dead animals at her doorstep.
She runs, leaving everything behind, but finds herself in a new world where magic is king and the group teaching young people how to use their magic want her to aid the police in paranormal investigations.

Someone or something is killing people and when tragedy strikes too close to home, can Selena stop hiding and find the power she needs to stop a monster?

                                My Review:

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Selena is a necromancer and is careful using her talents. She works in a diner with her best friend and they hang out a lot. Then someone starts leaving dead animals at her doorstep and she knows she has been found and she goes on the run.
Someone is also killing people and when Selena ends up in a place where magic is the be all then she is asked to help the police. She ends up losing her magic and is taken away to Canada. A lot of going on in this book.

Book Review: Capital Thirst by R.W. Buxton

Capital Thirst

DC bustles, the light from the city fills the night. But in the dark alleys and backstreets, only slivers of light from a full moon dance. In such an alley, a shadowy figure is hunched over a body. She lifts her head to reveal soulless eyes and fangs dripping with blood as she licks her lips with exhalation.

Standing up, she wipes her chin, and tosses her long black hair, then saunters away.

At FBI headquarters, Gerry examines the case files of wealthy men with no leads…

When predator and prey become one, no one is safe.

MY REVIEW

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This is a debut paranormal romance.
Erin is a vampire who has fallen in love with an FBI agent, Gerry, and his young daughter,Mary. Since Erin can't have children but always longed to be a mom then she has taken to this family and tries to spend as much time with Mary as she can. Gerry doesn't trust her and every time he turns around she has been in his face and in his home.
The man who turned Erin into a vampire, Garvila, is after her money and keeps blackmailing her. Even sends a couple of women out after her to teach her a lesson. Erin is not about to give into him.
I did enjoy reading this. I found Erin to be very pushy and bossy when it came to Mary. Gerry doesn't trust anyone and I think most of that is because of his job. I am hoping to continue on with this series.
I received this ARC for review.

About All That’s Been Said:

Izzy Kavanagh hates her new life in the US; that much she’s made obvious. She’s done everything she can to alienate her twin, Ethan, and to prove she doesn’t want to be there.

She’s certainly succeeded.

Perhaps a little too much.

Knowing her mother would be ashamed of her behaviour weighs on her mind, and the idea of having someone who cares about her isn’t so bad after all. Then there’s her brother’s best friend, Finn. No matter how much she wants to ignore him and pretend she doesn’t care about his opinion, he always seems to be there, and it’s getting harder and harder to act like she’s indifferent to him.

But the damage has been done, and now all she can do is count down the days until she’s allowed to return to the UK and forget all about her time in the US.

That’s what she’s wanted all along…right?

Exclusive Excerpt:

“Hello, Izzy.”

I look up from my locker and see Benson Montgomery there.

“Hi?” I reply, looking at the guy who randomly asked me out on a date when I’d just moved here. I don’t really have an opinion on Benson either way. He just sort of swans around the school with his preppy crew, looking down on anyone who doesn’t drive a car that costs over twenty thousand dollars and looking around to see who notices him. On principal, I should despise him, but I don’t care enough to do that. If you ask me, he cares too much about how other people perceive him and this image he’s trying to portray in order for me to dislike him too much. Anyone who cares so deeply about what others think about them is seriously lacking in self-confidence.

“I was wondering if you’re planning on attending the Rosemary Gala this weekend?”

Rosemary Gala? Why does this ring a bell?

He must read my blank expression. “Your grandmother organised it? It’s to raise money for the children’s hospital.”

That’s right. “No.”

He looks surprised. “No you’re not going?”

“No, I’m not going.”

“But my mother assured me you were. She spoke to your grandmother last week.”

That would explain all the emails and messages I’ve been getting from her. I haven’t even bothered to read them. “Well my grandmother is delusional if she thinks I’m going to voluntarily spend time with her.”

His jaw falls open. Clearly he wasn’t expecting that. “Well that’s a shame…I was going to offer to escort you as your date…” He lets the sentence linger as though his offer might change my mind.

“Still not going.”

He looks insulted. “You know, Izzy, I’m actually willing to overlook your recent transgressions and take you on a date.”

What the hell? “My recent transgressions?”

“Yes,” he says irritably. “That business with Craig McGarretty—I don’t know how someone like you would even consider going there. And honestly? It sounds like you’re rather lacking in friendships of any kind at the moment, so I would seriously reconsider my offer if I were you.”

What an absolute dick.

“You know what, Benson?” He straightens up and steps slightly closer to me. I think the stupid idiot actually thinks I’m going to agree with him. “Even if every single person on the face of this earth stopped talking to me, I still wouldn’t be caught dead on a date with you. Now leave. Me. Alone.”

He blinks in total astonishment, but I don’t wait to see if he has anything else to say to me because I see Paul in the distance. I slam my locker and hurry to catch up with him.

“Hey,” he says as I fall into step at his side.

“Do you know Benson Montgomery?” I ask.

“Yeah,” he hesitates. “I mean I know who he is. I’ve never spoken to him.”

“Well he’s a weirdo,” I tell him. “Stay away.”

He grins back at me, and we exit through the main hallway and walk down the stairs before heading to the junior parking lot.

“How was your day?” Paul asks.

“Eventful,” I tell him, and he smiles broadly back at me. Something tells me he already knows what went down between me and Evie, and I’m guessing he’ll be pretty pleased about it. He’s incredibly loyal, and Rachel is one of his friends. He won’t like what Evie did.

I open the passenger door to Paul’s car and swing my bag in.

“Um, Izzy?”

I look over at Paul, and he’s looking at something in the distance. I turn my head to see what it is and immediately want to scream.

What the hell? Apparently today is about to get even more eventful.

“What are they doing here?”

Craig McGarretty is parked up across the street from the student parking lots, not on school property (he’s made sure of that) but wearing his letterman jacket, as are all the buddies he brought along with him.

My head turns back towards the school just as Ethan, Finn, and several of their teammates stroll out of the main entrance. They’re laughing at something and standing around chatting. They haven’t noticed them yet.

“Wait here,” I tell Paul, already striding towards Craig.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was written in the area where I live so to hear the names of towns and roads was fun.Melanie is a witch hunter in Buffalo, NY. She is after a witch who put a spell on Casey days before he is to be married. Casey's ex hired the witch and had something taken from him that would hurt his marriage. Then she steals it from the witch and it keeps getting stolen from others. Casey hires Melanie to get the item back and Melanie wants to bring the witch to justice. Sometimes I would shake my head at all the antics and then I would cheer for the 2 familiars and then be sad. I would also think Casey got what he deserved and his fiance could do better.

Excerpt:

Wearing nothing but a pair of jeans and a bad ‘tude, Diego Stone lay on the sky bridge of his boat and stared up at the San Francisco sky. It was butt-ass cold, turbulent and moody, all of which suited him just fine.
He had no idea why he’d left sunny, warm, sexy San Diego.
Oh, wait, he did.
He’d received a text asking him to show up for his brother’s important, all-hands-on-deck wedding planning lunch that, as Rocco’s best man, Diego was required to attend. A text. And not from Rocco, but from his fiancé, Tyler.
Hands behind his head, feet crossed, Diego purposely relaxed his body one inch at a time. It was a technique he’d learned early on during a childhood as tempestuous and unstable as the sky above him. A childhood he’d spent right here in San Francisco.
When he cleared his head the best he could, he rose to get things over with. Being back in town for the next week was going to suck hard, but he knew of only one way to get through shit, and that was to plow straight ahead.
As far as command performances went, he could’ve tried a little harder to muster up some enthusiasm, but after ten years of being an island of one, he was out of practice at the whole family thing.
The French House at one p.m., the text had said. And, apparently, his presence was both needed and required. Funny, because once upon a time when Diego had desperately needed and required Rocco’s presence, he hadn’t gotten it.
Damn. And here he’d told himself that he was over the past.

I dive one hand straight into the hair at the back of her neck and pull her forward, smashing my lips to hers. Her surprised gasp only fuels me on further. I want her to know, no, I need her to know how much she means to me right at this exact moment. I don’t know why, but I feel an urgency to smash some of the walls she has up around her heart, despite my vow to wait for her to open up to me.

My other hand finds her waist, slowly sliding around to her back, grasping her sexy red shirt, pulling her closer to me. My tongue searching for hers as she opens her lips willingly, her hands gripping my shirt at my waist becoming just as eager. I kiss her deeper, a moan escaping her mouth making me ache for much more than just a kiss. We are yet to take it further than that, me wanting her to take the next step when she’s ready, but if our kisses keep heating up more each time our lips lock, I’m going to have to become accustomed to cold showers every time we part.

Against my bodies want, I slow the kiss down, pulling back slightly, nibbling at the side of her mouth as the sound of her rapid breathing almost breaks my restraint. I go to sit back, but her tight grip on my shirt won’t allow me. I place a finger under her chin and lift her gaze from my chest to my eyes. And damn. The heat and want swirling through her eyes has her looking more like sexy as sin, than sweet as sunshine. I can’t move an inch, I can barely take a breath as I let her control what happens next.

Her tongue darts out to moisten her lips and I just about pop the button of my slacks as my control in the groin area, completely gives out. Her hooded eyes look down to my lips, to my eyes then back to my lips. She leans in ever so slowly. I’m not exactly sure what she’s about to do, but the way her chest is rising rapidly, she seems to have no intention of calming the situation down anytime soon.

She lays her lips on the corner of my mouth then pulls back slightly. Her eyes raise to mine under the shadow of her long lashes and with our gaze still locked, she leans in and glides her tongue across the seam of my lips. Holy fuck. Has my girl suddenly came out of her shell? My mind and my body wants me to grab her and throw her down on the back seat and worship every inch of her entire body, but I know this is a big deal for her to be so brazen, so I continue to hold back and let her take her time.

Book Review: The Vangel by Tatenda Creed

The Vangel: A Supernatural & Paranormal Romance Novel (The Lost Archangels Book 3)Supernatural collides with Mortal instruments and Vampire Diaries.
Who is the Vangel?
Determined to protect Darcie by finding the Vangel, Alexandra agrees to enforce a dangerous plan which could result in the death of one of her closest friends. As she puts her hidden plans into action, she soon finds that her heart has a mind of its own. Could she be in love with the wrong man? It´s not long before she holds the identity of the Vangel in her hands, and with that knowledge, she realizes she´s not the only one with secrets. Getting rid of the Vangel is the least of her worries.
The Vangel is Book 3 of a seven-book series. Although this book's story is complete, it is not a standalone novel.  However, you won’t have to wait months or years to read the next book in the series. Each installment is released every month or two. Begin with the Prequel, Lost Angels if you haven’t read it already.
Buy from Amazon B&N
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This has a little of everything. Supernatural, vampires and romance. Even though Alexandra is young I still have a hard time thinking she can't make up her mind about who she really wants to be with. But I also know she is fighting for answers on who the Vangel is and not knowing if it is any of the men she really cares for.
Things are hot between Alexandra and Zachary but she still cares for Chan. For some reason I am team Chan. Just something about Zachary that does not have me rooting for him lol. It might be that I think he will end up being like his father. Then we find out more secrets as the book goes on and as always liking Zachary's mom. Alexandra's father gives her a job to do and she needs to get something from Zachary's house. Not sure if she can pull this off you need to read this book.
I received this ARC for review.
